Le Nouveau Jeu ou Jeu du Procès Dreyfus (The New Game or Game of the Dreyfus Affair). Design: Jules Dépaquit (1869-1924). 1 page with 12 court cards. Color line block, 312x234 mm (Cards: 72x48 mm), square corners, no index mark. Backs: Diverse ads. December 1898.
Lit.: Cary coll. 276.
The cards caricature the opponents of the Jewish staff captain Alfred Dreyfus (1859-1935). After a bogus antisemitic trial, he was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1894. New evidence and the intervention of major personalities led in the end to his vindication in 1906. King of Diamonds (FELIX) shows President Félix Faure; Jack of Diamonds, Jack of Clubs and Jack of Hearts display the nationalist writers and politicians Rochefort, Déroulède and Drumont, while Jack of Spades is marked by a black star in a corner: we see here the staff officer Esterhazy, who faked the principal piece of evidence against Dreyfus.
Small tears and defects in the white margins, faint browning, otherwise very good conservation.
